A project supported by the Ely center in Southern Ostrobothnia, Finland  - Nutrient recycling trial program

The new Fertilizer Preparation Act 711/2022 entered into force on 16 July 2022. The legal reform harmonizes legislation with EU legislation, product legislation and legislation related to the food chain.

Protecting waters from pollution caused by agricultural nitrates EU 91/676/EEC

Project description In the research and development work, manure nutrient recovery is modeled for pig and dairy farms. The recovery and utilization of nutrients requires that the water be separated from the slurry. Nutrients and solids dissolved in the water are recovered. The evaporation of nitrogen as ammonia into the air is prevented and  recovered as nitrate.

Biologically oxidized at high temperature and in solid form, manure nutrients do not travel with water into waterways. In oxidized form, encapsulated in microbial spores, the nutrients are optimally used by crops. In this way, the manure's nutrients are fully available to the plants. When oxidized, the manure's nutrients are odorless and permanent, forming an organic hygienic self-fertilizer.

The focus is planning and developing the construction of a reference facility. The project's research and development work is modeled e.g. on the Laukkala dairy farm in Kiuruvesi and on the pig farm in Perniö.

The goal is to develop technological solutions that are suitable for the treatment of all wastewaters and enable the production of biofertilizers, which can be used to recover nutrients. One of the targets is also to produce demonstrated data about the economic, cultural and nature-friendly ways of working that can be achieved with the help of the new technology. The purpose of the project is not just to promote clean, self-sufficient fertilizer production, but also a new way of how we think and make sustainable agriculture in general.

The project is supported by the Ely Center.
